Encaustic painting involves the use of melted beeswax to which pigment and other materials may be added. Each layer of wax is fused to the prior ones by the application of heat. Encaustic is an ancient medium found in the Egyptian Fayum mummy portraits dating to 300 BC. The surface of these paintings can have a unique richness and depth.
